Thendara Mountain Club is an organization of some 250 members based in a historic camp in scenic Harriman State Park. The club is open year-round. Our rustic lodge consists of a great room, six bedrooms, a large kitchen, indoor washrooms with hot and cold water, and an outhouse. Additional facilities include a bunkhouse, tent sites, a private swim dock, and a boat dock with kayaks and canoes, all for use of our members and guests. The vast network of Harriman hiking trails extends all around us.
The club opened in 1916—then part of the Green Mountain Club but now an independent organization. We are a diverse group of individuals and families who enjoy the club’s communal spirit. We are always eager for other nature-lovers to join our convivial group.
Our location: Thendara Mountain Club is on the south side of Lake Tiorati, in Harriman State Park, at 1984 Seven Lakes Drive, 1.8 miles north of the Kanawauke Circle and 1.5 miles south of Tiorati Circle. More precise directions are at the end of this section.
Our gate, off Seven Lakes Drive, is kept locked. To make inquiries and arrange a visit, email ThendaraMtnClub@gmail.com. We welcome visitors!
Members can find a schedule of hosted weekends on our website. These weekends include meals and various lodging options for those who wish to stay overnight. Volunteer hosts plan and supply all the food and assign the work of preparing or cleaning up after meals—at least one chore per person. Food costs are shared and day or overnight house fees assessed. All members are expected to share in weekend tasks. Cooperation with and appreciation for hosts’ arrangements and reasonable instructions are expected of all who participate in TMC activities.
Members can work toward obtaining Gate Access (providing entry to the grounds) and then a Lodge Key by completing a series of workshops, attending hosted weekends, and meeting other guidelines.
An important Thendara activity is trail maintenance—keeping miles of trails in Harriman State Park accessible for hikers. Members regularly mark blazes, clean up, and maintain over 10 miles of Harriman and Bear Mountain trails.
Individual and family memberships are open to people 18 and over. A family consists of two members who reside at the same address. Any dependents 22 years old or younger (as of Jan. 1) who reside at the same address can be considered dependents under that membership. A dependent has access to the club while in the company of at least one club member who accepts responsibility for the dependent. A dependent is not considered a member and does not have voting or other membership rights. This does not prohibit an 18-year-old from becoming a member and enjoying full membership rights.
The club assumes no responsibility for injuries or damages sustained by anyone using the club’s facilities or engaging in any of its activities. Waiver forms are to be signed on the first visit.
