Trail maintenance is a historical and important part of Thendara Mountain Club (formerly Green Mountain Club NY Section). During the last 100 years TMC members have volunteered thousands of hours maintaining trails in and around Harriman State Park in conjunction with the NY NJ Trail Conference.
Our founding members were extremely important in the planning and construction of the Long Trail in Vermont as well as building shelters along the trail. Link to History of Long Trail and TMC
In 1958 TMC members built the Gren Anderson Shelter along the Appalachian Trail in NJ. It was created as a memorial to Gren Anderson a TMC President and is still actively used today. Click Link to Gren Anderson Shelter
Harriman park has seen an increase of hikers over the years and our work is very important. Trail maintenance is our way of giving back to the Park. The Park and the State of NY allow us to rent a priceless one of a kind oasis on a lake just one hour from NYC.
Trail maintenance consists of walking your trail section twice a year, clearing away brush, trash and remarking blazes. Major issues such as large trees down are reported to the Trail Conference. They send out the sawyers and other crews to do major work and improvements. TMC member Marek Stycos is a NY NJ Trail Manager and our liaison to the conference. Marek trains and coordinates the TMC trail maintenance. If you have your Gate access, you already are trained.
Please volunteer to maintain a section of a trail, there are a few open sections. It’s a great idea to do it as a group or family and make it a fun outing. Contact Marek today to find out where you are needed.
Remember, you can also just pitch in periodically by helping the current trail maintainer.
We now have signs available to mark the trail heads and intersections. If you need a sign just let us know the name of your trail.
