Thendara Outdoor Club Celebrates 100 Years!
Harriman State Park group camps have come and gone but one, Thendara Mountain Club is celebrating 100 years in 2016. Thendara Mountain Club began as the NY Section of the famous Green Mountain Club of Vermont. On October 24, 1916 Thendara was created by 80 influential members of the tri state area with the goal of assisting in the building of the Long Trail in Vermont.
Early members included NY Supreme Court Justice, college professors and presidents, CEO’s of major corporations and editors of NY publications. Today the club membership stands at over 400 people representative of all walks of life, all with one common interest, a love for the outdoors, club fellowship and protecting our parks for future generations. Thendara members range in age from 1 to 90, families are welcome. Club members often remain active in the club for 30 40 or even 50 years.
In 1922 Major W. A Welch, general manager of Harriman State Park, arranged for the club to lease the Staff Cabin known as Thendara. The club has been caretaker of the camp ever since. Camp Thendara is located on top of a mountain ridge on Seven Lakes Drive overlooking Lake Tiorati. In the early years of Harriman State park over 90 groups maintained camps. Now it has dwindled down to under 30.
The Thendara Mountain Club maintains the camp building containing a great room with stone fireplace, sleeping areas and a kitchen. An open air bunk house is available and tent sites dot the camp. The club also has a swim dock and boat dock on Lake Tiorati for the use of its members. A small fleet of kayaks, canoes and sailboats are available for boating on Lake Tiorati. Year-round weekend meetups begin with a community meal made by the members. They often end with a group hike on the scenic trails in Harriman State Park.
Members of the club proudly volunteer their time in maintaining over 30 miles of hiking trails in Harriman State Park as a service to the hiking community in conjunction with the NY NJ Trail Conference.
Membership is open to any and all who enjoy and appreciate the outdoors.
